Radio listening remains stable at 45 million people, or 90% of the UK population*, it was revealed today (May 10, 2007) when UK radio audience quarterly data was released by RAJAR Ltd (Radio Joint Audience Research). Last quarter (Q4, 2006) RAJAR recorded the highest number of listeners, 45 million per week, since RAJAR began its weekly survey in 1992.
The Digitally Enabled Universe - defined as those people who have access to a DAB receiver or have ever listened to the radio via DTV (digital television) or Internet - has increased by 5% from 55% in Quarter 4, 2006 to 58% this Quarter (Q1, 2007). 19.5% of the UK population now live in homes that have a digital radio, up a substantial 43% when compared to Q1, 2006 (13.6%).
Radio listening via DTV (digital television) and the Internet: The number of people who claim they have ever listened to the radio via DTV and the Internet are both up by 2 points quarter on quarter; with DTV listening now standing at 41% and Internet listening at 24.3%. This compares with 36.5% for DTV listening and 20.8% for Internet listening in Q1, 2006.
Radio listening via mobile phone: RAJAR research released today also reveals that 10.7% of mobile phone owners (aged 15+) claim to have listened to the radio via mobile phones. This figure remains stable on Q4, 2006. However, it is up 22% year on year (8.8% in Q1, 2006) and the overall number of people who have ever listened via a mobile has increased due to rising mobile phone ownership. In addition, a quarter of 15-24 year old (1.6 million) mobile phone owners say they have listened to the radio in this way.
Radio listening via podcast: Listening to downloaded podcasts also continues to grow. RAJAR research, this quarter, shows that 2.5 million adults (18% of mp3 player owners) now report that they have used their mp3 player to listen to downloaded podcasts. This is a significant rise from 2.1 million in Q4, 2006.
Detailed data and individual radio station data, for both BBC and Commercial Radio stations, is available on the RAJAR web site at www.rajar.co.uk.
* This weekly reach figure is the number of people (adults 15+) in the UK who listened to a radio station for at least five minutes in the course of an average week during the quarter.
